The Basics of Poker

Poker is a game of chance that requires skill and understanding of game theory, psychology and probability. The game also involves betting based on the player’s position and their perceived value of their hand. While much of a player’s success in poker depends on luck, many players can make sound decisions based on strategy and probability to increase their chances of winning.

A player’s decision to call, raise or fold a hand in a particular betting round is known as their action. If they do not call the bet they are said to fold, or if they raise the bet they are said to “raise”. The amount of chips a player puts into the pot when they make an action is called their bet size. Players can also check (place or slide their chips to the side of the table without saying anything) and they can also drop, meaning that they put no more than their original bet into the pot and drop their cards.

After each player has their 2 hole cards there is a round of betting that starts with the person to the left of the dealer. Once this is over there are three community cards dealt on the table that everyone can use and a new round of betting begins. Once this is done the dealer will deal one more card face up to end the hand – this is known as the turn. After this the dealer will announce which hand was highest and push the pot of chips to that player.
